19th century Continental andirons with solid rock crystal obelisks

Approximate height: 14”

Photo above shows the objects before treatment. The andirons had been damaged by a fire that went out of control. This caused the crystal to shatter. The same damage had occurred in the past, so some areas had been repaired previously. Breakfaces were discolored with burnt glue and tar from the fire. The gold on the wrought iron was partly lost. Here are the objects after treatment. Cleaning removed the tar and fire scale. Reassembly and filling was performed using slow-setting epoxy formulated for crystal. Gold leaf was added, and the wrought iron was given a hot-wax patina. The client was cautioned to keep the andirons well away from the flames of a fire in the future.
